The Victim Services Unit of the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD), established in 1992, addresses the personal needs of victims of crime and other traumatic incidents. Its purpose is to ensure that no victim remains alone or uninformed.
The Colorado Victim Rights Amendment
The Colorado Victim Rights Amendment guarantees crime victims the right to be treated with fairness, dignity, and respect, and the right to be present and heard at all critical stages in the criminal justice system. The GJPD Victim Services is available to any victim needing support or resources during ongoing investigations and before a victim becomes involved in the judicial system.
Victim Services Coordinator
In addition, the Victim Services Coordinator and trained volunteers serve victims during critical incidents. They are the extended compassionate arms of the GJPD. Victim Services are available every hour, 365 days per year, to provide crisis intervention when officers request their presence at a scene. They are equipped to deal with difficulties like trauma, domestic violence, sexual assault, robberies, or unattended deaths. While on scene GJPD Victim Services offer comfort, assistance to the officers, and referrals to community resources.
Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering with Victim Services, we'd love the opportunity to tell you more about our program! Qualities needed are compassion for others, good interpersonal skills, a desire to serve our community in a very personal way, and the availability to serve on 12-hour, on-call shifts. Volunteers are provided comprehensive training every year.
