The Grand Junction Police Department started the Shop with a Cop program in 1992 in an attempt to brighten the holidays for area children. The first Shop with a Cop included Grand Junction Police Officers who escorted seven children in a day of shopping, ending in a trip to the movie theater. In the last several decades, the program has grown exponentially, providing countless Mesa County children with an unforgettable holiday experience! The program has grown to include Law Enforcement officers and public safety volunteers from across the Western Slope who join the Grand Junction Police Department for the Annual Shop with a Cop event.
What Shop with a Cop?
The GJPD Shop with a Cop program is a needs-based program, pairing over 50 Mesa County fifth graders, selected by school administration, with law enforcement officers for a day of shopping, food, and fun. This program is fully funded by donations, including the generosity and support of Back the Badge, Moose 92.3 FM, McDonald's, Chick Fil A, Mesa Mall, Rimrock Walmart, and countless community members and organizations.
Shop with a Cop is a beloved event for the GJPD, fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the community. Donations for the Shop with a Cop program and other kid-focused initiatives can be made in the form of cash or a check made out to Back the Badge.
